Event Made Possible by a Grant from the American Express
Performing Arts Collaborative Fund
ATLANTA -- The American Express Company will present "Symphony Street
Celebration," a musical open house featuring the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra
(ASO) on Saturday, May 11, 1996. Taking place in the newly-renovated Woodruff
Arts Center from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m., this free event is a unique, hands-on
way for the entire community to explore the exciting world of a symphony
orchestra -- a get-to-know-the-ASO day. "Symphony Street Celebration"
is made possible by a grant from the American Express - Performing Arts
Collaborative Fund Program (The Collaborative Funnd), from which the Atlanta
Symphony is one of only four performing arts recipients in the nation.
The many offerings of "Symphony Street Celebration" will appeal
to all ages and provide an entertaining and educational way for the community
to learn more about the music-making process and discover the wonderful
musicians that make up the ASO. Activities will range from experiencing
music in action -- through mini-concerts by the ASO conducted by Yoel Levi,
an open rehearsal of the Atlanta Symphony Youth Orchestra conducted by Jere
Flint, and chamber music by ASO musicians -- to participating in more interactive
opportunities such as meeting ASO musicians, learning to play instruments,
attending conducting classes, composing music with computers, and much more.
This event enlists participation from many groups: Orchestra musicians,
the Atlanta Symphony Youth Orchestra, students In the Black Talent Development
Program, the Atlanta Symphony Associates, ASO staff, American Express volunteers,
and special guests.
