The Minnesota Orchestra's assistant conductor, David Wiley, was named
music director of the Roanoke Symphony Orchestra and Roanoke Valley Choral
Society (RSO/RVCS) Thursday, April 18. Wiley will retain his position with
the Minnesota Orchestra, and will begin his three year commitment in Roanoke
immediately. Currently holding the title Music Director Designate with the
RSO/RVCS, Wiley will become Music Director and Conductor as of July 1-the
start of the 1996-97 season.
Wiley is only the second professional conductor to lead the Roanoke Symphony
Orchestra
in its 42-year history. Victoria Bond, who resigned in June 1995, was retained
as the first professional conductor in 1987. Wiley was selected from a field
of more than 200 applicants. Prior to joining the Minnesota Orchestra in
October 1995, Wiley was assistant conductor of the Indianapolis Symphony
Orchestra. A pianist and composer, Wiley has been engaged as guest conductor
for orchestras throughout the Unite I States, and was a conducting fellow
at the Tanglewood Music Festival. He is married to soprano Leah Marer.
