DAVID WILEY APPOINTED MUSIC DIRECTOR OF THE ROANOKE SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA

The Minnesota Orchestra's assistant conductor, David Wiley, was named music director of the Roanoke Symphony Orchestra and Roanoke Valley Choral Society (RSO/RVCS) Thursday, April 18. Wiley will retain his position with the Minnesota Orchestra, and will begin his three year commitment in Roanoke immediately. Currently holding the title Music Director Designate with the RSO/RVCS, Wiley will become Music Director and Conductor as of July 1-the start of the 1996-97 season.

Wiley is only the second professional conductor to lead the Roanoke Symphony Orchestra

in its 42-year history. Victoria Bond, who resigned in June 1995, was retained as the first professional conductor in 1987. Wiley was selected from a field of more than 200 applicants. Prior to joining the Minnesota Orchestra in October 1995, Wiley was assistant conductor of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra. A pianist and composer, Wiley has been engaged as guest conductor for orchestras throughout the Unite I States, and was a conducting fellow at the Tanglewood Music Festival. He is married to soprano Leah Marer.
