AT&T CHAIRMAN ROBERT E. ALLEN AND AT&T TO RECEIVE NEW YORK

PHILHARMONIC'S SECOND MAHLER AWARD ON MAY 29

Pianist Emlmuel Ax to Perform at Formal Event

On Wednesday, May 29, the New York Philharmonic will present its second Mahler Award to Robert E. Allen, Chairman ofthe Board of AT&T and to AT&T, in recognition of AT&T's ongoing commitment to the Orchestra. The chairman of the event is Peter A. Georgescu, Chairman and CEO of Young & Rubicam Inc. The award, named for Gustav Mahler, the Philharmonic's Music Director from 1909 to 1911, is awarded to corporations, foundations or individuals in acknowledgement of outstanding dedication to classical music. The Philharmonic's first Mahler Award went to Citibank in 1994.

AT&T has long encouraged and supported classical music. By underwriting commission programs it has fostered the composition and performance of new works. In addition, it has sponsored numerous domestic tours by American orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic.

The evening's proceeds will beneftt the New York Philharmonic Artistic Initiatives Fund, which supports in part the creation of new programs. Gifts to the Fund perpetuate the Orchestra's commitment to excellence and to reaching new audiences.

The black-tie evening will begin at 6:30 with a cocktail reception and dinner at Avery Fisher Hill. Music Director Kurt Masur, Gala Chairman Peter A. Georgescu and Stephen Stamas, Philhaxmonic Board Chairman, will present the award. Following the ceremony, special guest Emanuel Ax will perform. A dance will follow on the Grand Promenade.
