PHILADELPHIA, Sept. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- The members of the Philadelphia Orchestra will play a free Children's Concert to replace the scheduled concert canceled by the management of the Orchestra Association. Despite the ongoing strike, the musicians are dedicated to fulfilling the promise made to Delaware Valley children to expose them to the world of music with concerts designed specifically for them.
The free concert for children is scheduled Saturday, September 21, at 11:30 a.m., at the First Unitarian Church of Philadelphia on Chestnut Street near the corner of 22nd Street. The church hall can accommodate as many as 700 guests.
Admittance will be on a first-come, first-serve basis. Seating is unreserved. There will be NO tickets issued for the concert. Doors to the concert will open at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday. The concert is expected to last one hour.
Barbara Govatos, an Orchestra member, said that she wanted the next generation of musicians and subscribers to be able to hear the best music in the world. "We know that the children are our hope for the future and don't want our current labor problems to deter or preclude even a single child from the inspiration for career choices and enjoyment that music can provide and instill," Govatos said.
Approximately 45 Orchestra musicians will be performing, roughly the
same number that were scheduled to play during the originally scheduled
concert. Works will include selections by Mozart, Telemann, Tchaikovsky,
Bizet and Verdi.
