Endowment campaign reaches $55 million-exceeding goal by 10 percent
The Minnesota Orchestral Association (MOA) continues to reduce its annual
operating deficit, confirming today during its annual meeting that its fiscal
year ended on August 31, 1996, with a deficit of $190,000, which was $88,000
favorable to budget. This is reduced from last year's figure of $654,000
and from $2.5 million five years ago. The total operating budget for 1995-96
was approximately $23 million.
"We have come a long way and our long-range planning process works,"
President David J. Hyslop said, "thanks to tight controls on expenses,
aggressive revenue goals and our community's response to the Campaign for
the Minnesota Orchestra, an unprecedented effort in this Orchestra's history
that raised $55 million."
During the MOA's annual meeting, conducted by Chairman Michael E. Shannon
at the Minneapolis Hilton and Towers, Douglas Leatherdale, Campaign for
the Minnesota Orchestra chairman, announced that the endowment campaign
will be completed as of December 31, 1996, and that it has brought the MOA's
endowment to a record $94.6 million.
Elections were held in which the recommended slates of the nominating committee,
chaired by Judson Bemis, Jr., were approved for the officers, executive
committee, and reselected and new members of the board of directors. Shannon,
chairman since December 1995, will serve an additional two years in this
position.
The report of the audit committee, presented by chairman Paul L. Synder,
was accepted as submitted. Vice President and Chief Financial and Administrative
Officer E. Benton Gill reviewed a summary of the year-end financial statements
for 1995-96.
Written reports on Me year's activities of WAMSO (he Minnesota Orchestra
Volunteer Association) and YPSCA (he Young People's Symphony Concert Association)
were distributed. In addition to a variety of educational programs sponsored
by both volunteer groups, WAMSO contributed a record $590,000 in support
of Me Minnesota Orchestra.
