Composer Annie Gosfield\u2019s use of radio sounds and other-worldly effects, along with traditional instruments and ensembles, made her the ideal collaborator for this event. Structurally, Gosfield modeled her piece very loosely on Gustav Holst\u2019s <em>The Planets<\/em>\u2014or at least on the first four planets of his suite.<\/p>\n<p>And \u201caround downtown Los Angeles\u201d was literally that: performances occurred simultaneously at Walt Disney Concert Hall as well as at three outdoor WWII-era siren sites, where each of the sirens, all slated for removal and discard, were able to be repurposed for one final swan song, with near-instantaneous two-way communication, by utilizing the latest microwave audio transmission technology for the greatest simultaneity.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1279\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1279\" class=\"wp-image-1279 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.icsom.org\/senzasordino\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/LAPhilOutdoor1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.icsom.org\/senzasordino\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/LAPhilOutdoor1.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.icsom.org\/senzasordino\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/LAPhilOutdoor1-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1279\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span class=\"photocredit\">Photo credit: Craig T. Mathew and Greg Grudt\/Mathew Imaging<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<p>War of the Worlds could be experienced with ticketed seats for one of the Walt Disney Concert Hall performances, or through attendance at one of the three siren sites where seat reservations and unreserved standing room were free and open to the public.<\/p>\n<p>Thanks to the technology available, actors, singers, and musicians could participate at all four locations simultaneously, and all audiences\u2014at all locations\u2014could hear everything. Mathew and Greg Grudt\/Mathew Imaging<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<p>Onstage at Walt Disney Concert Hall was the main ensemble, conducted by Christopher Rountree, and comprising twenty-three musicians, along with a computer sound technician, actors, and singers.
