O<\/span>n Sunday, July 6, 2014, members of the San Diego Symphony\u00a0performed an unprecedented event at Friendship Park, in the very\u00a0southwest corner of the United States, when they gave a concert\u00a0while collaborating across the U.S.-Mexico border with musicians of\u00a0Orquesta de Baja California (OBC). This location is one of few along\u00a0the border where individuals can converse with foreign nationals\u00a0while remaining on their respective sides of the border. The holes\u00a0in the 20-foot tall metal border fence allowed the split ensemble\u00a0to communicate during the performance, attended by hundreds of\u00a0people in both countries. Although half the ensemble was visually\u00a0obscured, the music remained harmonious and synchronized.\u00a0San Diego Symphony musicians Igor Pandurski, A.J. Nilles, Marcia\u00a0Bookstein, and Jory Herman were joined on the U.S. side of the\u00a0border by the former concertmaster of Orquesta de Baja California,\u00a0Jorge Soto, with OBC\u00a0musicians Alejandro Garcia, Apolo Pachinski,\u00a0Augusto Miron, and Oscar Miramontes Yllan on the Mexico side.<\/p>\n

This performance came at a time of much turmoil in the national\u00a0media about immigration reform. As a result, national news organizations\u00a0ABC, NBC, and CBS covered the event in addition to our\u00a0local media. However, the performance was not directed at the\u00a0political debate. It was in promotion of a San Diego Symphony\u00a0project called \u201cYour Song, Your Story,\u201d which was presented in\u00a0a series of July concerts. Those performances, funded by a James\u00a0Irvine Foundation grant [as reported in the November 2012 issue of<\/a><\/em> Senza Sordino<\/a>], brought together the music of composer Bill Conti,\u00a018 community performing groups, the entire San Diego Symphony,\u00a0and a dozen user-submitted videos (from over 300 submissions,\u00a0which can be viewed online at YourSongYourStory.org<\/a>) throughout\u00a0the entirety of the 30-minute multimedia work. In total, the concerts\u00a0reached a diverse audience of 6,100, with 59% of the audience\u00a0being non-Caucasian, and 33% having never previously attended a\u00a0San Diego Symphony concert.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
